No Looking Back

I’m not one to stare
into the mirror
like some teenage girl,
searching for imperfections
where there are none.
I don’t need that face in the glass
to count mine. My fingers
can find them in the dark.

But there’ve been times
I awakened, gazed dreamily,
half-asleep, at myself
in the reflective glare,
and thought I saw you
moving in the background,
like you’re there, too.

I’ll admit to once or twice
turning around to see
if you’re really there,
but of course you’re not.
It’s only when I lie down
again and look back
that your ghost appears.
