When You Disappeared

When you disappeared—
hiding in plain sight,
the less sensitive would say—
I thought you’d be fine.
Folks drop off the grid,
behind walls, curtains and doors,
submerge in their personal seas
of woe and intrigue, all the time.
I figured if you wanted some me
to check on you, care about you,
ferret in the trash to gauge
your fortune and feelings
(good or otherwise),
press my ear to
this screen,
that door,
even your screendoor,
you’d’ve asked.
So I went about my business,
this open book.
One containing true fictions
and fictional truths,
some inspired
when you disappeared.
